. It is widely believed that Pune police was established during the 1818 police re-organization but city policing history goes well before that. Pune police has 4 zones, 2 zones each in Northern and Southern regions. Police operates from 29 police station

s with its jurisdiction spread across 790 square kilometres (305 sq mi). It also has the responsibility of traffic policing the city roads.

Organization

Currently Pune police top level include 1 Joint commissioner, 4 Additional commissioner, 11 DCPs or Deputy commissioners. The city has 29 Police stations divided amongst 4 Zones each headed by a DCP or a Deputy commissioner of police.

Additionally it also has the following departments -
  • Additional commissioner (Administration) assisted by DCP HQ - 1 and DCP HQ -2
  • Additional commissioner (Law and Order, South Pune) assisted by DCP Zone - 1 and DCP Zone - 2
  • Additional commissioner (Law and Order, North Pune) assisted by DCP Zone - 3 and DCP Zone - 4
  • Crime Branch: It is headed by Additional commissioner (Crime) and is assisted by DCP Crime and DCP EOW and Cyber crime. Crime Branch is responsible for co-ordinating with other State Police/central agencies of India in serious and sensational crimes. It collects criminal intelligence for crime mapping.
  • Special Branch: This is headed by a DCP and deals with student related crimes, politicians, banned organization and immigrants.It also operates the Foreigners Registrations Office (FRO)
  • Traffic Branch: Deals with road and traffic safety.
