As of 2005, the village of Pueblo Nuevo which was the seat of government of the municipality before the 1920s had a total population of 2,837. El Salto which is closer to what was at the time the new two-lane main paved road then was made the new capital. El Salto grew over the following decades to the point where the population is now over 20,000. The municipality as a whole has a population of almost 50,000. The village is on the new four-lane highway route between Durango, Durango
and Mazatlan, Sinaloa and is likely to see expanding tourist traffic due to its proximity to the Baluarte Bridge
