Prešeren Award is the highest decoration in the field of artistic and in the past also scientific creation in Slovenia
awarded each year to one or two eminent Slovene artists. It has been bestowed since 1947 on the eve of the Prešeren Day
, the national cultural holiday commemorating the anniversary of the death of the Slovene national poet France Prešeren
. On the same occasion, the Prešeren Foundation Awards are awarded to up to six artists. The awardees also receive a financial award.
Since 1962, these awards have been conferred only for exceptional achievements in the field of arts. Members of the Awards Board are representatives of various artistic disciplines nominated by the government and elected in the National Assembly of Slovenia
