song written by Fredrik Kempe
in 2008 and performed by Swedish singer Eric Saade
. It was an entry by Saade in the Melodifestivalen 2011 contest, in a bid to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011
in Düsseldorf, Germany. On 12 May, the song qualified for the finale. In the final Popular came in third place, making it Sweden's most successful Eurovision entry in the 2000s. The song is from his second studio album Saade Vol. 1
. The song samples the drum hook from Boney M's "Nightflight to Venus
" from the 1978 album by the same name.
In the selection, "Popular" first performed in the contest in Linköping
made it through to the final in Globen on 12 March 2011. In the final it was the winning entry, winning both the Swedish televoting and the international juries voting.
The single was released on 4 March 2011, just before the Melodifestivalen 2011 finals and went straight into number one on the Swedish Singles Chart
the same week. It stayed on the top of the Swedish Singles Chart for 4 consecutive weeks. It has achieved Double Platinum Certification for selling more than 40,000 units.
A longer, uncut version was uploaded on 13 May 2011, which includes a scene at the beginning in which Saade is being beaten up in an alleyway, which had been removed from the earlier release
