The 1:1 Digital Classroom Project was funded under the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009. Approximately 6.68 million dollars was set aside for innovative projects using 1:1 laptops, of which Ponca City received approximately $900,000.
The East Middle School English Department consists of five English teachers, three Reading Specialists, and a Media Specialist. This group collaborates to create lesson plans to help students meet Oklahoma Standards in Reading and Writing while incorporating the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS.S).
The math department teaches Algebra and Pre-Algebra in a project-based format using 21st Century technology. Students complete instructional/learning goals and meet objectives not only in mathematics, but in technology skills as well. This department is dedicated to teaching Ponca City's students to be life long learners and contributing citizens on the local, national, and global levels.
The science department utilizes project-based learning through 21st Century technology to encourage students to investigate, solve, and communicate scientific problems. Students review lab safety, measurement, and the Scientific Method while learning about Physical Science, Chemistry, and Earth's processes. Science teachers work collaboratively to facilitate and maximize student potential, creating innovative thinkers and strategic problem solvers.
East Middle School offers a wide variety of elective classes. Graphic Arts and Digital Literacy focuses on the applied use of technology. Keyboarding is a required skill for high school technology courses. Leisure Arts, Contemporary Living, and Home Economics teaches students skills applied to home life. Physical Education, Spanish, and Yearbook are other classes offered.

East Middle School
East Middle School (EMS) is located in the North Central Oklahoma town of Ponca City. Serving approximately 375 students per year, EMS is the 8th grade center for Ponca City Public Schools. School staff includes a Principal, one Assistant Principal, Counselor, a technology coordinator, 28 full and part time certified teachers, Title 7 Coordinator, and 5 teachers aides. As a school-wide Title I site, EMS focuses great effort on improving Math and Reading levels. State standardized test scores show 80-90% of the students consistently performing at proficient or better in Math and 70-80% in Reading. East Middle School sits on the site of Ponca City's original school building built in 1893. The original wooden school building burned and was replaced in 1911 with a native stone building. The 2nd building was condemned in 1938 and replaced with the current building in 1939 for a cost of $441,216.23. Ralph Lester was the buildings inaugural principal. The building's 1400 seat auditorium was later named in honor of Mr. Lester. The current moniker of East was acquired in 1961 when the school district opened another junior high on the west side of town.One-to-One Laptop School
