. Founded in 1893 - before the creation of USP itself - it was the first engineering school in the state of São Paulo and its original name was The Polytechnic School of São Paulo. It was incorporated to the USP in 1934. It is a public institution meaning students do not have to pay for tuition fees.
Students are known within campus as "polytechnics" (Portuguese

: politécnicos), and every year, 750 new freshmen are admitted.
Freshmen will spending most of their first and second year (of a 5 year course) in a building known as Biênio (Biennial), after which they proceed to their diverse specialities in 5 separate buildings: Electrical, Civil, Materials, Mechanic and Chemical.

Since many graduates from this institution have, throughout brazilian history, occupied positions with public exposure and/or business and industry leadership, it has a reputation of 'training leaders'. It is also a national reference when it comes to technical expertise and is regarded as the best engineering school in Latin America .

Admissions

Admission takes place annually, along with all other courses in the USP, through an exam called "vestibular" held by an institution named FUVEST

(University Foundation for the Vestibular). POLI-USP selects only 750 students out of 11,500 candidates , making it the largest engineering admittance exam in Brazil.
