The DBT is based upon article 40, 2 of the Basic Law
. It was established in 1949 as the Hausinspektion der Verwaltung des Deutschen Bundestags. In 1994 it was renamed to its current name. Officers are not empowered as assistants of the state or federal attorney (Ermittlungspersonen der Staatsanwaltschaft).
