in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. The courthouse is the third building the county has used for court functions and county administration.
was located at a place called Old Rolfe. The courthouse there was a brick building on a stone foundation that also served as a schoolhouse. The bricks for the building were made of local clay. The county seat was moved to Pocahontas in 1875. A new courthouse was built there for $2,600. The present courthouse was designed by the Des Moines architectural firm of Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson in the Classical Revival style. The building was completed in 1923 and it was constructed of Bedford stone
