. He was the General Secretary of the Youth Organisation, SLFP and became the SLFP organiser -for the Chilaw Electorate in 1998. From 1993 to 1998 he was a member of North Western Provincial Council and Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Irrigation of the North Western Provincial Council from 1998 to 2000. In 2000 he entered Parliament and was appointed Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs till 2001. He reappointed to Parliament in February 2008 and since June 2008 is the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
