Plot

Navy SEALS officer Steve McGarrett returns to his native Hawaii after his father, retired police officer Jack McGarrett, is murdered by Victor Hesse, a terrorist mastermind Steve had been pursuing for years.
He heads to his father's home, where he gathers key evidence.
He is confronted by detective Danny Williams, a recent newcomer from New Jersey, who is working the crime scene.

Steve goes to Danny's apartment to ask about a lead he had called about. Apparently ballistics from the bullet that killed his father were linked to a gun once owned by suspected gun runner Fred Duran. Steve then says that he had Danny transferred to his new unit, and has Danny drive him to the North Shore to interrogate Duran. Danny is not happy either with being pushed into a new unit, or Steve's method of "police work".

When they arrive, they end up in a firefight with Duran where Danny gets grazed in the arm by a bullet. Steve and Duran end up in a standoff, but Danny shoots and kills Duran from behind. They do, however, find a young Chinese girl, Chen Chi, locked in Duran's residence, apparently a smuggled immigrant being used as a prostitute. Steve and Danny argue over Danny getting shot and Steve losing his only lead, which eventually comes to blows between the two.

Steve believes that Hesse's entry into Hawaii was probably assisted by local human traffickers. He and Danny go to an old friend of his and one of his father's proteges, former police officer Chin Ho Kelly, for assistance. Chin Ho has connections, but is reluctant to use them. He was disgraced from the police force after accusations of taking bribes. After Chin Ho asserts his innocence, Steve asks him to join his task force. Chin Ho meets with a friend who was once a police informant, and finds out about Sang Min, a human trafficking "snakehead" based on the island.

In order to extract Hesse's whereabouts from Sang Min, they need to set up a plant. Chin Ho has an idea on who to use: Kono Kalakaua, his young cousin, who is about to graduate from the police academy. While he sets the date up, Steve and Danny get together for more detective work, and eventually bond after several days of grating on each other. Danny reveals that he moved to Honolulu to be near his daughter, Grace, who lives with his ex-wife and her rich husband. He also gives the reason for the nickname "Danno", a nickname Steve had heard him use when talking to Grace.

When the sting comes down, they use remote sensing equipment to pick up the conversations, eliminating the need for a wire. However, Sang Min orders Kono's phone number run. They trace the resulting cell phone call, and discover a mole in the Honolulu Police Department. They storm his warehouse, capturing him and killing several of his associates. They also find a shipping container full of Chinese refugees, and are able to reunite Chen Chi with her parents.

In order to get the information, Steve tells Sang Min that, if he goes to jail, his Rwandan wife and son will be deported, leaving his son at the mercy of the Hutu

militias. Sang Min tells Steve that Hesse is to leave the next day, and what boat he'll be on, in exchange for a guarantee that his family can remain in America. Steve and Danny get the ship's departure blocked, then raid the boat. Steve is shot in the shoulder when confronting Victor Hesse, but is able to shoot him off the boat. He orders the Coast Guard to find Victor's body, then asks Danny to book the surviving shiphands.

The episode ends in the task force's new headquarters as Steve, Danny, Chin Ho and Kono set up equipment and think of a name for their unit.
