. Originally the town's high school, Phillips Middle School was constructed in 1922 with additions completed in 1948 and 1979. When the current high school was built in 1958, Phillips became known as North Junior High School, housing grades 6, 7, and 8. The Fort Dodge Community School District's adoption of the middle school philosophy in 1984 changed the name of the building to Phillips Middle School. Districtwide grade reconfiguration in 1990 changed Phillips to a building housing grades 7 and 8. Current enrollment is at approximately 600 students.
The Fort Dodge Community School District has plans to replace Phillips Middle School in the near future. Both Phillips and Fair Oaks Middle School (the district's 5th and 6th grade building) are to be combined at one location. Land for the building has been purchased near the intersection of 10th Avenue North and North 32nd Street in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Designs for the building have been finalized, and construction es expected to begin in late 2011. The project will be financed solely through revenue generated from local sales tax. Upon completion of the new middle school, the future of Phillips Middle School is uncertain. Funds for demolition have not been included in cost estimates for the new building.
