History

The society was formed in 1995, the tenth anniversary of Larkin's death in 1985. It achieved charity status in the United Kingdom in 2000. Anthony Thwaite, one of Larkin's literary executor

s, became the society's first president. The current Society Chairman is Edwin Dawes.

Aims

The society's stated aims are as follows:
  • To promote awareness of the life and work of Philip Larkin and his literary contemporaries.
  • To bring together all those who admire Larkin's work as poet, novelist, jazz critic and librarian.
  • To promote relevant publications on all things regarding Philip Larkin.

The society carries out various activities, such as a University of Hull

 lecture which was carried out in February 2009 addressing one of Larkin's novels, A Girl in Winter. A history of previous events have been held by the society. The society is currently hosting a series of events in Hull, collectively described as Larkin 25
