, he is noted for his knowledge of the roots of Irish music and culture and its cross-fertilisation with those of the US in particular, he is a popular figure in Irish music circles. He attended Colaiste an Spiorad Naoimh secondary school.

Career

He is the maker of acclaimed TV programmes on Irish music, with the production company Hummingbird, including the Other Voices series. He is a member of the Irish Arts Council. He presents the South Wind Blows at 2100, Sundays on RTÉ Radio One, Ireland's national broadcaster.

King has been closely involved in the arts in Ireland for over 20 years. His roles have included that of film producer/ director, music producer, musician, songwriter and radio broadcaster. His company Hummingbird was established in 1987. The landmark television series Bringing it all Back Home won a National Primetime Emmy in 1991 and in 1993 he was nominated for a Grammy for his music documentary Rocky World on the Canadian musician Daniel Lanois. King produced and directed Keeping Time, a film celebrating the poet and piper Seamus Heaney and Liam O'Flynn for BBC television in 1998.

As a musician, he has recorded seven albums to date. Sinead O’Connor has covered his song ‘I am Stretched on your Grave’ on her album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got and by Dead Can Dance on their album Toward the Within. In the past year, Philip is the series editor of Other Voices now in its seventh season, Ireland's flagship rock music television series for RTE Television. He also is the series editor of the Tradition music series The Full Set. He has also produced a 90-minute special on Nigel Kennedy and the Irish Chamber Orchestra and a one-hour documentary on Nigel Kennedy shot on the Dingle peninsula. He produced the IFTA Award winning film John McGahern - A Life and produced Thomas Moore - One Faithful Harp for RTÉ television. Philip presented the South Wind Blows on RTÉ Radio 1 for a number of years. He has directed five series of Sé mo Laoch for TG4, documenting and archiving the lives of Ireland's most celebrated traditional musicians.

In 1987, Philip set up Hummingbird Productions with Nuala O'Connor and Kieran Corrigan. He was appointed by Minister John O’Donoghue TD to the Special Committee on the Traditional Arts in December 2003.
