. He read Law and Theology at the Universities of Sydney (B.A., LL.B., LL.M.) and Oxford (D.Phil.), and was sometime Vice-Principal at St Andrews University. During his tenure of the AHRC he continued to hold the Chair in Biblical Criticism at St Andrews.

Professor Esler is a member of the South West Science and Industry Council.

On 1st October 2010 Professor Esler became Principal at St Mary's University College, Twickenham.
