Peter Verhelst is a Belgian Flemish
novelist, poet, and dramatist. He won the Ferdinand Bordewijk Prijs
for Tongkat. His latest novel is a political thriller, Zwerm.
, Belgium. From his youth he was extremely interested in books and read atlases and encyclopedia as well as novels. At the age of 16 he started writing poetry. He became a teacher teaching Dutch, English and History. In the mean time he debuted in 1987 with the poem "Obsidiaan". His first novel, "Vloeibaar harnas" followed in 1993. Afterwards he worked as a teacher at the Institute for Food in Brugge. In the year 1999 he quit his job and started writing full time. In the year 2000 he won the prestigious Gouden Uil (Golden Owl
) and Young Gold Owl (Jonge Gouden Uil), a literary prize for Belgian literature in the Dutch language. Recently he also started writing for theatre. Verhelst is currently living and working in Bruges, Belgium.
