Trgovich was a member of the 1971 East Chicago Washington High School Senators basketball team, which went undefeated (29-0) and won the Indiana state high school championship. Among his teammates were Junior Bridgeman

Trgovich played college basketball at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1972-1975. At UCLA he played under legendary coach John Wooden

. In 1975 Trgovich helped lead UCLA to the NCAA championship, facing off against his old high school teammate Bridgeman in the national semifinals.

Trgovich coached East Chicago Central to the Indiana AAAA state championship in 2007 and abruptly resigned soon thereafter. Trgovich accepted the head coach position at nearby Indiana University Northwest, beginning with the 2007-08 season.
