History

Perth Theatre Company was founded as SWY Theatre Company by graduates from the specialist Theatre Arts course at John Curtin Senior High School in 1983. The Company quickly gained a reputation for excellence and award-winning work. Between 1983 and 1986, SWY operated out of a disused warehouse in Fremantle

 before moving to 65 Murray Street, Perth in 1987. In 1994 the Company adopted the name of Perth Theatre Company and found a new home at the Playhouse Theatre

Perth Theatre Company has an outstanding reputation for producing works of exceptional quality. In 2000, PTC's co-production with Theatre West, Speaking in Tongues, was nominated for Best Production in the Equity Awards, as was Face to Face in the 2001 awards. In 2002, Perth Theatre Company's productions of The Return and Stories From Suburban Road were also both short-listed for Best Production. In 2003, Perth Theatre Company was awarded 4 I.F.A.C Equity Guild Awards. Skin Tight won Best Production and Perth Theatre Company's original Artistic Director - Alan Becher, received Best Director for his work on this enthralling piece. Shadow of the Eagle, by George Blazevic and Ingle Knight and Alan Becher, was awarded Best New Play, with Geoff Kelso winning Best Actor for his portrayal of John Curtin.

In 2004, Perth Theatre Company has continued its reputation for presenting award winning actors and productions – a trend is exemplified by Ingle Knight being nominated as Best Actor for a Green Room Award - for his one-man-show The Getaway Bus.

Perth Theatre Company received three awards at the 2007 Equity Guild Awards. Nicola Bartlet won Best Female Actor for her role in The Goat, Or who is Sylvia? and it also won Best Production. Mel Cantwell won Best New Script for Marmalade and Egg.

In 2008, Perth Theatre Company's only Artistic Director, Alan Becher died and Melissa Cantwell was appointed the company's new Artistic Director. In the same year Perth Theatre Company won four Equity Guild Awards for the production The Turning including; Best Production; Best Design, Kingsley Reeve; Best Supporting Actor Male, Reg Cribb and Best Supporting Actor Female, Caroline McKenzie.

In 2009, Perth Theatre Company presented the Australian exclusive of Equus at His Majesty's Theatre, have been busy preparing to move to the new State Theatre Centre of WA and won seven Equity Guild Award for best production, best new script, best Actor (Male and Female), Best Supporting Actor (Male and Female) and best newcomer.
