The lake was recently discovered to be infested with zebra mussels, which threatens not only Pelican Lake, but all lakes connected by the Pelican River.

The lake covers an area of 3986 acre (16.1 km²), and reaches a maximum depth of 55 ft (16.8 m) in the northern portion of the lake. The lake got its name because of its unique and very intricate resemblance to the shape of a pelican
