. He graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1930, and the 1940 thesis Gullalderdrøm og utviklingstro earned him the dr.philos. degree in 1941. He worked as a lecturer in Berlin, Trondheim and Oslo before being hired as a professor of European literature at the University of Oslo
in 1949. From 1960 to 1974 he held a professorship in the history of ideas. He was also an editor of the biographical dictionary Norsk biografisk leksikon
, having himself biographer Maurits Hansen
in 1942.
