James was born in Washington D.C and raised in its nearby Maryland suburbs. He graduated from Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Calvin has dated a few men in the first three seasons of the show, but most notable may be his fraternity brother Grant, played by Gregory Michael
. Grant is a closeted gay Omega Chi brother who becomes Calvin’s roommate and later his live-in boyfriend. When he comes out, Grant becomes overly sensitive to what others say and think about his sexuality. Grant becomes more flamboyant which bothers Calvin, as this is not the same brother he began to date. The two men break up when Grant prefers to explore his sexuality rather than spend quality time with Calvin.
