As an MRC Training Fellow (1986-1989), he was awarded an MSc in Medical Statistics from the London School of Hygiene (1988). His MD (supervisors David Clayton and John Walls) focused on the application of survival models to a variety of complex problems in renal medicine (University of Leicester, 1992). (UK), and holds professorships within the Faculties of Public Health in universities both in the UK and Australia . He is on the Specialist Register for Public Health Medicine. Between 1992 and 1999 he was Senior Biostatistician and Head of the Division of Biostatistics at the Institute for Child Health Research, Perth, Western Australia. He took up the Chair in Genetic Epidemiology at the University of Leicester in September 1999. Paul Burton’s research interests over the last 15 years have subsumed three major areas: (1) methods research inbiostatistics and genetic epidemiology; (2) applied research in genetic epidemiology and complex disease epidemiology; and (3) a broad-based interest and involvement in biomedical research strategy. In recent years, his research work has increasingly focused on activities that promote and facilitate the construction of major infrastructural research projects in population-based biomedicine. In direct relation to this, and following early interactions with both the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Wellcome Trust (WT) soon after his return to the UK, he subsequently became a member of the Health Services and Public Health Board at MRC, and the Study Design Expert Group at WT.
In 2011, Paul Burton joined the International Prevention Research Institute
