In 1955, he married Saraswathi (Sara). They had two daughters- Anitha and Anuradha.

Though unlike most of his peers in the literary field he shunned the media and seldom appeared in public forums, he was a close observer of the developments around him which is reflected in all his works. While many storywriters of his generation turned to writing novels he stuck to short stories.

In 1972 he was given Kerala Sahitya Academy award for his collection Muni .

Though he could never fulfill his campus-day dream to study film making he was able to leave an indelible mark in the history of Malayalam cinema by producing the pathbreaking film Uttarayanam

He died on June 5, 1988.
