In 2010, Mara won the Ward 1 seat on the District of Columbia State Board of Education with 53 percent of the vote to 47 percent for incumbent Dotti Love Wade in a non-partisan race.
In 2011, Mara announced that he would run in a special election for at-large member of the District Council.

He owns the Dolan group, a fundraising, government relations and consulting firm in Washington.

Mara is originally from Rhode Island.

Experience

Mara was a staffer for the late Senator John H. Chafee, working on environmental issues. He is treasurer of the board of One World Education, a former board member of Hope for Kids, and a mentor at the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund. Mara tutors a special education student each week through Project Northstar. A high percentage of those in the program are homeless. Mara is also a member of the board of both College & Career Connections and the Columbia Heights Day Initiative.

Endorsements

The Washington Post endorsed Mara for D.C. city council in the Republican primary and in the general election.

The Washington Blade, a newspaper for the District's gay community, endorsed Mara, noting his support for same-sex marriage and other stands in support of gay rights. The Washington Examiner
