Her first novel A Shadow of Gulls, published when she was 18, won the 1977 David Higham Award for Best First Novel of the year.

As well as award-winning radio plays (A Room Full of Mirrors), Finney has published fifteen other novels, including three Elizabethan spy thrillers and four Elizabethan crime novels, four children's books set in Elizabethan times and the two books written in "Doglish", the language of dogs.
