In the year 2000 the PCNGR was reconstructed from Ixopo to Umzinkulu, a former branch of the Umzintu - Donnybrook railway

As the line was partially lifted after closure in the eighties, the line was in need for a complete rebuild.

Gradually, a fleet of locomotives and rolling stock was acquired from various closed railways in Natal
