It is a medium-sized shrub with slightly succulent leaves, red flowers and fleshy orange or red berries.

It serves as an excellent plant for stabilising mobile sand dunes. Its strong, extensive roots bind the sand, and send up shoots elsewhere to do likewise. It can also be grown as a garden plant for coastal gardens. It can be propagated by seed or by cuttings.
