He was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the Mamata Banerjee ministry on 20 May and allotted the portfolios of commerce and industry, public enterprises, information technology and parliamentary affairs.

He was nominated deputy leader of the house in 2011. He was leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly during 2006-2011.
