 grown trachea transplant. The first successful operation on a child followed in March 2010. On June 9, 2011 at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, doctors including Dr. Paolo Macchiarini implanted a synthetic windpipe into a 36-year-old man with late-stage tracheal cancer.

In July of 2011, Dr Macchiarini came to the United States and interviewed Rachel Phillips, a former Royal Ballet of London dancer, to assess the potential of using this procedure to help with her severe case of tracheobronchomalasia brought on by ElhersDanlos Syndrome complications. After reviewing her case, Mrs. Phillips was approved for the treatment and will likely be the first American recipient of the procedure.
