Panos Institute

The Panos Institutes are a network of independent non-governmental organisations working to ensure that information is effectively used to foster public debate, pluralism and democracy (see Communication for Development
). Globally and within nations, Panos works with media and other information actors to enable developing countries to shape and communicate their own development agendas through informed public debate. The institute's name may have some connection with ancient Greek
word "φανός" pronounced "phanos", which means torch. Influences may also be found from the Nepalese word "panas", which is a lamp lit when people gather round to discuss important issues.
The first institute, now Panos London
, was founded in London in 1986, and there are now a total of eight institutes with satellite offices around the world. Panos London is also a part owner of Panos Pictures, a photo agency.
