It was founded in 1879 under the name Las Casas. The name was changed to Palmira and the community was incorporated in 1940.

The thermal water resort of Ciego Montero and the homonymous bottled water plant are located in the municipality, 12 km (7.5 mi) form the town of Palmira.

In 2004, the municipality of Palmira had a population of 33,153. With a total area of 318 km² (122.8 sq mi), it has a population density of 104.3 /km2.
