supplying over 95% of the islands tourist demands for food, water and building materials. The Port itself sits away from the village on a concrete structure surrounded by warehouses.

Geography

Desert sands dominate the area around the village. Hills are to the northeast. Lush vegetation is within the villages and the coastline. Palm trees cover much of its landscape. Fruits, vegetables and wheat are exported from other parts of Cape Verde due to a wetter climate and small farm size.

Information

The village is in the island's low to middle class. Some houses were built with mud-brick and stone. The rest were of concrete or sand with stone. Currently houses are built with brick and steel reinforced concrete. Until the 1980s, all of its population were farmers -based in agriculture. Part of the many needed materials comes from the island capital and the diaspora. Electricity, communications and appliances have been available in the Palmeira area (as well as phone lines) since the mid to late-20th century.
