"Pain" has become the band's biggest hit to date. It reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart for four consecutive weeks, becoming their biggest hit on that chart to date. On the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, it reached number one and stayed there for an impressive thirteen consecutive weeks. It has also hit number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100

. The third version runs 3:28 long and is titled "Pain (Pleasure Mix)". The intro and verse both contain a 12 string guitar, giving the song extra depth.

On some radio stations it changes the lyrics in the chorus from "Pain, I like it rough, cause i'd rather feel pain than nothing at all" to "Pain, life can get rough..." to eliminate a so-called "sex reference". Most fans do not see the presence of a "sex reference", but of Adam's expression that the feeling of numbness in the world around us is worse than a little pain.
