Ogatsu, along with other nearby villages, was almost completely destroyed in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami

. Many residents were killed, and several survived marooned on school rooftops waiting to be picked up days, or even weeks later. It is still not known whether there will or will not be an attempt to rebuild the town.
