It has been speculated in at least one magazine that the name "Kama" refers to the shape (relating the name to the punctuation mark "comma"), though it is more likely that the name refers to the weapon
Kama (weapon)

.

"The Kama is a formidable weapon, traditionally used in pairs, though in agricultural use it would be used one-handed, while the other hand grasped the stalks for cutting."

Being used in pairs, the kama weapon is similar to the nunchaku. As the nunchaku are corded or chained together (and the Wii Nunchuk is tied to the Wii Remote), the kama are not (and the wireless Nyko Kama is cordless). As there are similar, non-bladed weapons (such as the tonfa, which would have likely also been a suitable name for the controller), it is possible that the kama weapon's blade may also have been inspiration (note the metaphor of "cutting the cord").

Differences of the Kama to original Nunchuk

  • The Kama is slightly wider, making it easier to hold.
  • The "Z" and "C" buttons are made of transparent plastic.
  • The wireless version requires 2 AAA batteries.
  • On the wireless model, a power button and light are located below the control stick.
