Norman Network Protection

Norman Network Protection (NNP) is a inline network file analyzer that runs on a normal server with 3 network adapters.
Two of the network cards are set in promiscuous mode, allowing traffic to be sent transparent through the two adapters while NNP will scan the traffic that is passed through.

Norman Network Protection supports the following protocols:
  • HTTP
  • FTP/TFTP
  • POP3/SMTP/IMAP
  • SMB/CIFS (version 1 and 2)
  • RPC
  • IRC
  • MSN
  • Bittorrent

Norman Network Protection is unique from most other products that serves the same functions, the two main differences are its ability to scan multiple protocols and where a proxy-setup first must download the entire file, then scan it and then decide whether or not to pass it along, where as NNP will start sending packages to the client from the requested file immediately and when NNP has all the packages that file consists of it will hold back the last packet while it scans the file. If the file was deemed trustworthy NNP will forward the last packet, if not it will simply drop the packet, thus resulting in a corrupt download and an unusable file.

Norman SandBox Technology

Norman Sandbox is a virtualized environment(emulator) where executable files can be examined to see what kind of changes a specific file would do to a system.
The emulator contains a BIOS, ROM, simulated hardware and networking capabilities.
Based on the actions done by a file Norman Sandbox will automatically try to tell you if the file is behaving malicious or not.

Norman Sandbox is implemented in all Norman's products, but on a different operating-level.
Emulating CPU cycles can be a time-consuming task so for performance reasons this is not enabled on by default in the on-access scanner.

Norman Sandbox is also sold as a separate product, giving other security companies the ability to analyze what a file does.
