 who has been term-limited out of office after serving as mayor from the early to late 90s and subsequently re-elected twice a few years later (2005 and 2007). She is the first woman to lead the city as mayor.

On November 17, 2009, former Downriver Development Authority (DDA) Chairman Joseph Kuspa succeeded Wurmlinger as he was sworn in as Southgate's new mayor.

New name for City Hall

A rededication ceremony was held on June 20, 2008. It was part of the city's 50th Anniversary celebration and the event concluded with the opening of the city's "Concert in the Park" celebration.
On the same day, Southgate's City Hall was named after Wurmlinger for all of her years of service and commitment to the City

Retirement

Prior to the November 2009 general election for Mayor, Wurmlinger announced that she would not be seeking re-election for Mayor and that she had made the decision to permanently retire from political office. Around the same time, she then announced her backing of Downriver Development Authority Chairman Joseph Kuspa, who then himself went on to win the general election on November 3, 2009, defeating former Southgate Mayor Dennis David.
