The company started in 1975 as a government research and development program to build turbines called the N1000 for Maglarp in Skåne and Näsudden in Gotland

In 1999 the company became privately owned Nordic Windpower AB. After selling only 5 turbines it became a United States entity in 2005 and promptly sold 19 turbines. It received a $16 million loan guarantee from the United States Department of Energy
