, although initially most of the published articles were written by University of Otago students. The first issue of the journal was published in March 2004.

The student executive charged with running the journal was also initially comprised solely of students from the Dunedin School of Medicine, however in time students from Christchurch and Wellington were also included and in 2006, the journal elected its first members from the Auckland School of Medicine. The current chair of the executive is Benson Chen, who is based in Auckland.

Content

The journal publishes original research articles, literature reviews, features articles, book reviews and conference reports. Submissions from medical students anywhere in the world are invited and in the past the journal has published articles written by students from Australia, the USA, the UK, Mexico, Brazil and Nepal. No direct payment is made in exchange for articles, however, book and cash prizes are awarded for the best academic and feature submission in each issue.

The journal is funded by a combination of advertising and sponsorship including, in the past, grants made by the New Zealand Ministry of Health

Awards

Issue 11 of the journal was the winner of the New Zealand Medical Students' Association's inaugural Award for the Best New Student Initiative in 2010. The award was given in recognition of the excellent contributions the NZMSJ has made in furthering and promoting medical student research in New Zealand.
