ers. Through direct representation, impact and class action litigation, consultation and community education, NYLAG serves individuals and families residing in the five boroughs of New York City who would otherwise be unable to access legal assistance. A multi-service agency, NYLAG's mission is to increase access to the law by making legal services available to a wide range of low-income populations, including victims of domestic violence, immigrants, the elderly, the chronically ill, children with special needs, Holocaust survivors, and many other less fortunate members of society.

It was founded in 1990, and as of 2009 has a paid legal staff of 95 and hundreds of volunteers. In 2008, NYLAG provided free legal representation to over 35,000 individuals.

In the 2000s, the NYLAG filed a class action lawsuit with the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, suing the United States government for delays in the processing of Immigration Applications.
