Encyclopedia
The 421 class was built in between 1965 and 1966 by the Clyde Engineering
in Granville, New South Wales
. These mainline locomotives were a follow on from the 42 class
units, which had one cab only. The locomotives retained the classic "bulldog nose
" as with the other Clyde built locomotives, i.e. GM, S
and 42
classes at one end, but feature a flat-cab at the other end. In this respect, they are unique amongst bulldog-nose locomotives in the world.
The locomotives had an EMD 16-567C
engine producing 1455 kW, with an EMD D32F generator and EMD D67 traction motors. The 421 class can achieve a top speed of 115 km/h. They ride on Co-Co bogies and operate on standard gauge. They are 18.91 m long and weigh 110 tonnes.
Five locomotives were bought by Northern Rivers Railroad 42103, 42105, 42106, 42107, 42109, which was then sold to Queensland Rail
subsidiary Interail
. Other units saved were 42101 which is preserved at the Goulburn Roundhouse Heritage Centre (private), while 42102 is preserved at the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum
. 42106 is still stored at Casino and never entered service with NRR or Interail
