. The population was 523 at the 2000 census. The town was settled in 1775 and incorporated on March 18, 1837 from New Limerick Plantation. It received it name from the fact that many of its settlers had previously lived in Limerick

at the southern end of the state, which in turn was probably named after the Irish city of Limerick

In the town the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 31.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males.
