The station was opened on 1 March 1848 as the northern terminus of the Great Grimsby and Sheffield Junction Railway from New Holland to , with trains using the pier from the first day. It was closed and the ferry withdrawn on 24 June 1981 on the same day that the Humber BridgeHumber Bridge
