Evans, who spent his early football years with both Essendon Baptists St John's juniors and University High School Old Boys, played his football as a ruckman. After playing 10 games with Essendon in 1967, Evans was kept out of the side for most of the 1968 season with a hamstring injury. His first game of the year was a preliminary final and a week later he appeared in the 1968 VFL Grand Final
