The National Police Academy was established in 1978 with the Commandant's office in Islamabad and the actual academy 31 km (19.3 mi) away at Soan camp. The academy was poorly resourced, lacking professional trainers and provided offerin few courses.

The academy is headed by a commandant, a PSP officer with the rank of Inspector General of Police or Additional Inspector General of Police
