, released soon after his departure from Deep Purple

Deep Purple

Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although some band members believe that their music cannot be categorised as belonging to any one genre...

 in 1989. It features a varied selection of songs, with one of Gillan's most passionate and impressive performances in "Loving on Borrowed Time" and "No More Cane on the Brazos", a traditional tune. The album was produced by Leif Mases and features a number of guest musicians.

The album was available only as an import in the USA until 1997 when it was re-released for American market by Eagle.

Naked Thunder was followed by a lengthy tour and a live video Ian Gillan Live released the same year. The concert was released on DVD in 2001.
