Nabam Tuki of the Nyishi community was sworn in as the new & eighth chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh on 1 November 2011 by Governor Joginder Jaswant Singh
, who administered the oath of office and secrecy at the Raj Bhavan in Itanagar.
He succeeds Jarbom Gamlin
as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.
More than three months of bitter internal revolt and political uncertainty in Arunachal Pradesh ended Tuesday with Nabam Tuki sworn in as the new chief minister replacing Jarbom Gamlin.
Governor Gen (Retd) J.J. Singh administered the oath of office and secrecy to the 47-year-old Tuki at a simple function at the Raj Bhavan here.
“I am grateful to the legislators for electing me as the Congress Legislature Party leader. My priority would be to work towards all round development of the state,” Tuki told IANS soon after being sworn-in.
Tuki was public works minister in the outgoing cabinet and also the state Congress party president.
There has been a growing revolt in Arunachal Pradesh with a majority of the 42 Congress legislators in the 60-member house opposed to Gamlin. The dissidence was spearheaded by Tuki.
The rift between Tuki and Gamlin had become a major issue with the majority of Congress legislators demanding Gamlin’s resignation for his alleged authoritarian rule.
Gamlin was sworn in as chief minister on May 5 after the death of former chief minister Dorjee Khandu in a helicopter crash on April 30.
Finally, Gamlin resigned as chief minister late Monday and Congress president Sonia Gandhi appointed Tuki as the CLP leader Tuesday morning, hours before the swearing-in ceremony.
Gamlin was also present at the swearing-in ceremony.
“We shall work hand in hand and try to carry out all development activities,” Gamlin said.
Tuki was first elected to the second legislative assembly in 1995 from Sagalee constituency and served as the deputy agriculture minister in the Gegong Apang ministry.
He also served as Transport and Civil Aviation minister in 1988. Earlier, he was the IFCD minister in 1996.
He was re-elected to the assembly in 1999 from the same constituency and became a cabinet minister with the Environment and Forest portfolio in the Mukut Mithi ministry.
He was re-elected in the 2004 and 2009 assembly elections and served as the PWD and urban Development minister under the Apang and Khandu ministries.
Born on July 7, 1964 in remote Ompuli village in Sagalee sub-division under Papum Pare district, Tuki is a graduate and has seven children, including two sons.
He also served as state NSUI President (1983 to 1986) and was Chairman, North East NSUI Coordination Committee (1984 to 1986). He was General Secretary, All India NSUI (1986 to 1988) and Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress President (1988 to 1995).
Tuki also served as Vice Chairman, North Eastern Youth Congress Coordination Committee (1988 to 1993) and as Working President, North Eastern Youth Congress Coordination Committee from 1993 to 1995.
He is a sports lover and Tuki is also the current president of the Arunachal Cricket Association.
