NBC Chicago Nonstop is a 24-hour news and entertainment service on the secondary digital television subchannel of NBC's owned-and-operated station WMAQ-TV
. The new Nonstop service replaced the NBC Plus
weather channel which was aired on the DT2 subchannel of the aforementioned station.
The NBC Chicago Nonstop subchannel is currently transmitted in 4:3 standard definition with 16:9 letterboxes. This is in contrast with the other NBC Nonstop subchannels that are currently on the air, which are transmitted in 16:9 enhanced definition widescreen. However, with the announcement that Universal Sports
(which is currently seen on WMAQ-DT3) will cease terrestrial broadcasts in January 2012, the bandwidth that is currently used by that subchannel is expected to be either utilized to increase the bandwidth of the Nonstop subchannel or reserved for mobile TV. This increased bandwidth may then be used to allow NBC Chicago Nonstop to be transmitted in true widescreen instead of its current letterboxed 4:3 format.
