The NBC Chicago Nonstop subchannel is currently transmitted in 4:3 standard definition with 16:9 letterboxes. This is in contrast with the other NBC Nonstop subchannels that are currently on the air, which are transmitted in 16:9 enhanced definition widescreen.  (which is currently seen on WMAQ-DT3) will cease terrestrial broadcasts in January 2012, the bandwidth that is currently used by that subchannel is expected to be either utilized to increase the bandwidth of the Nonstop subchannel or reserved for mobile TV. This increased bandwidth may then be used to allow NBC Chicago Nonstop to be transmitted in true widescreen instead of its current letterboxed 4:3 format.

Basis and synopsis

NBC Local Media (the owned-and-operated stations division of NBC Universal), based on the success of its New York Nonstop service, began an initiative to create more local content for its other stations. During the fall of 2010, NBC launched new Nonstop channels on the secondary subchannels of its Washington, D.C.
