A miller usually refers to a person who operates a mill, a machine to grind a cereal crop to make flour. Milling is among the oldest of human occupations. "Miller", "Milne" and other variants are common surnames, as are their equivalents in other languages around the world...

" (as a profession). It is the most common family surname in Germany and Switzerland and the fifth most common surname in Austria (see List of most common surnames). Other forms are "Miller" (mainly Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and "Möller" (Northern and Central Germany and The Netherlands). Of the various family crests that exist, many incorporate milling iconography, such as windmills or watermill wheels. Names of this derivation exist in much of Europe, for example Melnyk (Ukrainian: Мельник) in the Ukraine or Melnik (Russian: Мельник) in the Russia.
