Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (abbreviated as MARCO) is one of the leading museums of contemporary art in Mexico
. MARCO organizes major exhibitions with regional and international contemporary artists. It is located in the heart of Monterrey
next to the Macroplaza
and Barrio Antiguo. MARCO was inaugurated on June 28, 1991, was designed by internationally renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta
in a postmodern, minimalist style.
Outside the museum at the entrance is a large dove sculpture by artist Juan Soriano
, called "La Paloma" (The dove). This sculpture is 18 feet (5.5 m) tall, weighs 4 tons, and is made of bronze.
The construction occupied 16000 sqm, with 5000 sqm for exhibition in 11 halls. Also, there is a central yard with a water mirror, an auditorium, a gift shop, a restaurant and sculpture yard.
