Founded in 1891, the club has expanded greatly from its beginnings. It now fills two buildings totaling 550000 square feet (51,096.7 m²), making it the largest indoor athletic club in the world. It is colloquially referred to as either "The Multnomah Club," or simply "The MAC." Non-members often erroneously refer to it as "The MAC Club." Its emblem is a winged "M". Its current membership stands at approximately 20,000 people.

The club is known for its exclusivity. A lottery for possible membership is only held approximately every four years, and reapplication is required every time. The initiation fee is approximately $5000 for an individual member, and monthly dues thereafter are $154.

Facilities

The MAC has seven indoor tennis courts and two outdoor courts. In addition, there are three indoor swimming pools (one being Olympic length); a hot tub; an exercise and conditioning room; three full-size basketball courts; racquetball, handball and squash courts; an indoor track; a full-size gymnastics gym; four studios for Pilates, yoga, and aerobics; a lounge for junior members; a child care center; a store for clothing and exercise accessories; three full-service restaurants; and banquet facilities.

The club's primary facility is located adjacent to Jeld-Wen Field, a multipurpose stadium located on land formerly owned by the club, directly behind the park's south end bleachers.
